Want Work This Weekend?

The Bay at Oakridge is looking for Holiday Helpers this weekend. $10.00 per hour, paid in HBC gift cards, which can be used at The Bay, Zellers, Home Outfitters and/or Fields. Must be 16 years or older, have a social insurance number (SIN), identification with date of birth and black pants. They will provide a red t-shirt. Helpers will be on their feet most of the time, greeting customers, tidying, re-hanging clothes, etc. Must work a minimum of 4 hours sometime this weekend (Friday open to 11pm, Sat and Sun open 9:30-7pm).

Corsa is giving away five $1500 scholarships for post-secondary. Candidates must demonstrate: South Asian/Indo-Canadian Heritage, Financial Need, and possess the following characteristics: character, citizenship, initiative, academic achievement, extra-curricular involvement, and leadership.

ACE-IT Programs

If you are interested in applying for an Ace-It Program, listed below, you need to complete your application and submit it to me by November 30th.
Go to www.vsb.bc.ca/programs/ace-it-programs to print off application form.

Here are the current programs:

Auto Refinishing Prep tech – late January start – end in June. 4 days a week at VCC (Fridays to do academics) – we have 8 spots
Plumbing – mid June to end of July. 5 days a week at PIAB in Delta (Annacis Island) – we have 5 or 6 spots. Must be a graduating student
Metal Fabrication – full time at BCIT February to early July. – we have 1 or 2 spots
Painting - mid June to end of July. 5 days a week at Finishing trades union in Surrey (skytrain access) – we have 1 maybe 2 spots. Should be a graduating student.

TRACE2 - Research Project on Marijuana at UBC

There is an opportunity for students to get a job as a co-researcher at UBC. This is a great opportunity for those interested in the medical field. You will get paid to research the effects of marijuana and to create a personal health message. The project is for 6 weeks and takes place after school. If interested, please see Ms. Alvares.

LPI Dates

If you are interested in taking the Language Proficiency Index exam at John Oliver, the exam will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2011 at 3pm in the CAF. You must register online for the exam at http://www.lpitest.ca/ by November 22nd at the latest.

There will be another exam on April 19, 2012. Registration will open January 2012.

Most post secondary institutions require the LPI if you have not completed at least 3 years of school in Canada or in English. You must check your college or university for their language requirements.

Students, if you haven't done so, you can research the colleges and universities you would like to attend and begin the process of applying for admission. Here are important dates to keep in mind for applying:

UBC - now accepting early admission and you can do this online.

BCIT - begins Oct. 1 until program is filled.

Langara - begins Oct. 1 until program is filled.

Also, important dates for post secondary information in our school:

Oct. 3/11 - Canadian University Event 9-10:30am

Oct. 26/11- UBC Night 6:30pm in our Library

Nov. 3/11 - Post Secondary Presentations 12:30-3pm.

Course Planning

We are working on Course Planning this week. I will be taking you out of English class to discuss with you courses for your final high school year - Grade 12! I will review graduation requirements to help you in choosing your courses. If you already know what is required for entrance into post-secondary, please choose your courses accordingly.

Also, please submit your grad transitions assignments to Mr. Harapnuick asap.
